Collaboration with Step Up to Art Lab + City of Cincinnati
	︎

	Signage + Wayfinding

The Step Up to Art project’s origin began in 2019, when the University of Cincinnati College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning(DAAP)’s grantcellerator program paired Kate Bonansinga, a professor and director of DAAP’s School of Art, with Muhammad Rahman, an assistant professor of design, to research and develop a community enrichment program. The signage and wayfinding project has been recognized with the highest Honor catagory in the prestigious ‘Cincinnati Design Awards’ 27th event (CDA27).
Winning project: https://lnkd.in/esqD6rrR
Date of Completion:
September, 2023
Project Cost: $26,300

External Collaboration: City of Cincinnati, DOTE, Office of Architecture and Urban Design, Graphics Section; Step Up to Art Lab — University of Cincinnati; Spring In Our Steps; Holthaus Lackner Signs;

We Collaborated with Joell Angel-Chumbley, Supervising Graphic Designer in the
Department of Transportation Engineering (DOTE), City of Cincinnati, in designing
the signage system for the Step Up to Art project which integrated QR Codes, Navigation maps and highlights the unique collaboration among stakeholders and the community. It also includes field surveys, measurements, budget-refinements,
evidence-based research and finalization of the location of the signages. The project harnessed community input and investment in the creation of a public art and wayfinding signage network on the Ohio Avenue
Steps between Mount Auburn and Clifton Heights.
We have curated a signage standard that will provide a consistent information layer, while allowing artistic contents. The stairways with signs will become both estinations and nodes of a city-wide network of ‘pedestrian-transportation-system-as-art-experience’
with efficient connections between walking routes
and neighborhoods. The newly envisioned signage system has been strategically placed
to provide clear and intuitive directions, ensuring that everyone can easily navigate through the neighborhoods. With clear directions for pedestrians alike, urbanite pedestrian eventually find the experiential and safest routes to
their destinations.

Collaboration with Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority (SORTA)
	︎

Go MetroCity-wide Bus Stop Signage Systems

The University of Cincinnati College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning(DAAP) has an exciting intergovernmental agreement with Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority(SORTA) to provide a range of design, research and urban planning services over the next three years (2023-2025). By implementing the ‘research through design’ method, we are focusing on the intersection of accessible design, visual hierarchy
of complex information, and technology to craft signage solutions that simplify communication in the urban environments, enhance user experiences while commuting, and foster a sense of community.

It was thrilling to get the opportunity to work with SORTA
and contribute to the city.

Transforming bus signage design into an integral part of the urban systems design involves considering various aspects of the urban environment, transportation network, and userexperience. Understanding the Urban Context is important. By understanding the broader urban context where the bus signage will be implemented, we wanted to ensure that bus signage is seamlessly integrated into the overall transportation network. We ensured User-Centered design—a signage with a focus on user needs—prioritize legibility and visibility of signage, especially from a distance and in various lighting conditions. Use typefaces with better hierarchy, typographic attributes for public display, appropriate color contrast, and suitable materials. We tried to establish a clear wayfinding system that guides passengers by reducing redundancies. Using signage hierarchy our design is trying to convey the important information first. We needed to considere providing information in multiple size and formats (e.g., text, symbols, and graphics) to cater to a familiar brand attributes. Lastly, we wanted to design the bus-stop signage that contributes to the contemporary yet a cohesive visual identity of a urban city like Cincinnati. We will gather feedback from commuters, transportation authorities, and other stakeholders to identify more opportunties of design and iteratively refine the signage system based
on this feedback

	Cincinnati Neighborhood Business District (NBD)
Storefront Signage
	︎

	AACSRE Fellowship

Abstract:
Signs contribute significantly to the visual identity of neighborhoods, often representing the interplay of the collective social, political, cultural and economic values of the people who live and work there. On-premise signs displayed on building facades and storefronts in the neighborhood business district of three distinct neighborhoods in Cincinnati, OH are examined to document the typographic styles and form (material, size and scale, color, etc.) of the signs. An empirical photographic survey is employed for elevation mapping, to record the full range of on-premise signs in each neighborhood business district. Over 150 on-premise signs are documented and analyzed. Our findings suggest that as neighborhoods get gentrified, particularly with non-local capital and investment, the signage form and character, represented by the typeface, shape, material, illumination and other properties, become more homogeneous, replacing the variety of typefaces as well as signage form. The study found that the signage used by the chain stores and other new businesses that are not place based to be mostly all-capitalized, three-dimensional, back-lit, and having other properties that are undifferentiated, generic, and visually monotonous.

We explore the
intersection of accessible design, visual hierarchy
of complex information, and technology to craft legible and readable solutions
that simplify communication in
the urban environments, such as signage,
wayfinding, printed collaterals, applications etc.
by enhancing user experiences while commuting,
and
foster a sense of community.

In contemporary urban environments, urban signage and wayfinding serve as crucial elements for navigation, info. accessibility, and enhancing the overall urban experience for residents & commuters.
However, challenges arise due to diverse inter-disciplinary factors that designers must navigate to meet the needs
of users effectively.
To address these challenges, the University
of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Arch., Art,
and Planning (DAAP) entered an inter-governmental agreement with the Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority (SORTA)
to provide comprehensive design, research, and urban planning services over
the next three
years (2023-2025) in Cincinnati.

Implementing the ‘research through design’ methodology, an interdisciplinary
team comprising faculty and student researchers from School of Design focuses on the convergence of citywide
transit infrastructures, particularly bus stops, with
public spaces. The objective is to prioritize accessible
design, establish clear visual hierarchies for complex information, and integrate technology to streamline communication in urban environments while enhancing user experiences
